Sometimes a little change can make a big difference. That's why the subtle smoothing of a line here or rounding out of a sunken area there can take entire years off of your appearance. Juvéderm® Voluma, Radiesse®, Restylane®, and other fillers are designed to address these facial details that come with aging, from wrinkles to hollows to thin lips.
Many dermal fillers, including Voluma®, are made up of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance that keeps skin pliant and moist. Our natural hyaluronic acid diminishes over the years, however, which means the skin eventually loses its flexibility, leading to the formation of wrinkles, creases, and furrows. Other substances that begin to disappear over time include elastin, collagen, and even fat. As this happens, cheeks begin to sink, sections of the face begin to sag, and lines form. Some fillers, like Radiesse® and Restylane Lyft®, address the wrinkles. Others, like Voluma®, specifically add volume to where it's gone missing in the cheek area. Still others, like lip injections, plump up a very specific feature. Dr. Christine Cheng and the team at Nuveau Medical Aesthetics can recommend the ideal filler for your unique situation.
While all fillers basically add volume, they do so in different amounts and for different reasons. There are three primary functions:
Wrinkles are lines etched into the skin, which means Radiesse® or a similar product can fill them in, something like blowing up a partially deflated balloon with more air. This is different from how a neuromodulator like BOTOX® works, given that it blocks signals that tell muscles to contract and create visible wrinkles.
Lips can be thin for a variety of reasons, from genetics to all loss of collagen over time. What is collagen, exactly? It's a protein that keeps skin supple and lips plump. Without it, lips lose their prized roundness. Restylane® Silk, Juvederm® Ultra, and other fillers specifically address this issue as lip injections.
Collagen and fat loss elsewhere on the face can cause sagging and sinking. Cheeks may flatten and droop, creating hollows in one area and loose folds in another. Fillers like Juvéderm Voluma® XC pump up these deflating areas, giving them a youthful roundness once again.
No matter the region of the face targeted, the fillers will be injected with a needle in a process that can take mere minutes.

This is part of the Juvéderm® family of fillers, but while many of the options are designed to address wrinkles, Juvéderm Voluma® XC focuses on adding volume to sunken areas of the face. Specifically, it rounds out the portion of the cheeks dubbed "the apple." Voluma® results can last up to two years, especially under optimal conditions.
This differs from the similar Voluma® in that it targets wrinkles, from moderate to severe. Ultra is primarily used on wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth area. Results can last from nine months to one year.
Also similar to Ultra, Juvéderm™ Ultra Plus smooths out moderate to severe nasolabial wrinkles, with results that can last about a year.
Just like Juvéderm offers Voluma® and other products, Restylane® has a family of fillers, each with a different focus. Restylane® and Restylane-L® address facial wrinkles and folds. Those two fillers, along with Restylane® Silk, are used as lip injections for people 21 and older. Restylane® Silk also corrects lip lines in the same age range.
Radiesse® is another filler that focuses primarily on wrinkles, including smile lines, marionette lines, lines at the corners of the mouth, pre-jowl folds, and chin wrinkles. In addition to adding volume, it stimulates collagen production to continue the aesthetic benefit long term. Results can last longer than a year.
Restylane Lyft® is part of the Restylane® family, with Restylane Lyft® treating wrinkles, like nasolabial folds.
The list of dermal fillers, from Voluma® to Restylane Lyft®, can look daunting, but there's no need to wonder or guess at which is best for your needs.
